Why the notion of faith is equivalent to poison. Part-6

To stop the flow of poisonous belief it is imperative to keep religion under constant criticism
Many maintain the belief that the matters of religion are quite delicate and sensitive to begin with. Many maintain that it is unwise to keep ‘bashing’ it with heavy words, imprudent to make fun of it in any way, devalue it, and of course downright reckless to criticise it in some capacity. Even if you want to discuss it you have to tread lightly, and probably ‘cleanse’ yourself in some holy capacity to begin with.
It’s amazing how laughable these matters are. There is nothing in the world which hasn’t undergone criticism at least once. History teachers don’t criticise Chenghiz Khan, out of fear that it will rile or offend someone who idolizes his ethos. Someone who practices history never feels for a second that he is offending someone whenever he criticises the barbarism of the Nazis or the Japanese, or of the sadistic actions of the Pakistani army during the liberation war of 1971 in Bangladesh. In fact newspapers like the Daily Prothom Alo tend to churn out provocative articles like this on a daily basis. Instead of say, serving them with a lawsuit, we tend to bring in our rational or logical side and attempt to comprehend what they are trying to comprehend from a scientific viewpoint no less. Why is it that the rules of engagement are different for religion?
It takes little to rock the fragile sentiments of the believers. They get rattled whenever someone questions them about the raw injustice upon the non-believers during religion induced warfare. They also tend to get uptight whenever someone points out the inhuman antics of their Gods/Goddesses or their prophets/messiahs, or the how women have been deprived of their sovereignty, or how unscientific or illogical the directives in their religious books are. If you indulge in making fun of religion, well, let’s just say that the deep blue sky that “God has adorned as his roof” comes crashing down on top of them. It is astonishing how reciprocal the believers are whenever somebody resorts to poke fun at religion in parallel, and they feel the irresistible urge to turn the world upside down in response. And yet if someone does the same thing to issues in literature, economics, politics, sport, the general social infrastructure amongst others no one is bothered in the slightest. Except of course when it comes to religion.
Let me elaborate a bit more. If you pick Bangladesh for sample representation, we’ll find that the Awami League is in constant criticism of the country’s other major opposition party BNP, while the BNP is engaged in vice versa. Similarly in America the Republicans are either criticizing or downright opposing the ideologies of the Democrats, while the Democrats are engaged in vice versa. Socialist and capitaliost oppose each other from their respective viewpoint. Society, literature, history, science, sports, technology – none of these aspects are above constructive criticism save religion, which is living under the protective shell of its blind believers. They will strive protect its integrity from any form of criticism at any cost. They are prone to using sentiment as a viable excuse, at times implying their strength in numbers (opinions in favour), and at times by maintaining the whimsical stance that it is “crucial” to maintain “law and order in society”. In that case am I too wrong to say that religion is analogous to a wax doll that people like to hone and polish or like an obnoxious and spoilt pet that you like to keep around anyway? Not that they don’t indulge in criticism themselves, oh no. They are ever ready and jump at the first opportunity to thoroughly scrutinize matters of science or technology, especially anything which opposes religion in parallel. They are prone to lend their opinions and poke fun at the same time, be it drawing Darwin’s head on top of a baboon’s body, telling girls what to wear and what not to and if they don’t comply, resort to ordering a ‘Fatwa’ (religious instruction) on them. Not only that they are quick to identify ‘Murtads’ and issue random kill orders on them but when it comes to religion, they want to play by different rules.
Although it is true religious believers think that they can bend the rules a bit (or bypass them if needs be). They assume for instance that the Lord created the world with the utmost of caring and love in mind. But what if someone asks who created the Lord then? Funnily enough, more often than not the answer is, “normal rules do not apply to the Lord. Do not ask these questions, say no evil and think no evil”. But in conjunction the believers want everything in this world to be scrutinized with a fine tooth comb save religion, which “does not fall within the rules”. If I am being honest forget those who have faith or want to have it, even us free thinking spirits can’t help but fall into the cleverly hidden traps of these carefully disguised ruses they tend to call logic. As a result, more often than not we orchestrate our downfalls. Barrister and humanitarian worker Mr Edward Tabas has clarified this matter in an article titled “Atheist Must Not Self-Censor” that he wrote for the Free Inquiry magazine quite recently. He wrote –
“There is no reason at all to be submissive to the inadequate theories of religion.  There is nobody that can provide any concrete reasons to stop criticising religion or examine it scepticism. Instead all religious publications are filled with accounts of tyranny and barbarism. They are also comprised of instructions ranging from ideas on how to suppress the freedom of women, while simultaneously containing dire warnings for the non-believers and also instructions on how to subjugate lower caste people. Thus it is unfair that everything else in this world, save religion, is liable to be scrutinized. But sadly in countries like Bangladesh where religion has nestled itself so deep into the social system, that we find ourselves automatically refraining from criticizing it at all there.
I’ve talked about the sentiments of the believers, what about the non-believers? Atheists like us, who are hurting every day. Our sentiments are dented on a daily basis too, just by turning on the TV every day. We flick through channel after channel where each show starts with a recital from the Quran or the Bhagvad Gita all done, in the name of appeasing an invisible, cryptic and silent deity. Our sentiments are further played with when we see religious studies forced upon children during their secondary level education. We are most perturbed when religious fairytales like the ‘Meraj’ and ‘Burak’ are unwittingly compared with Einstein’s theory of relativity in order to validate that they actually happened. We get aggrieved when the theory of evolution gets erased from school textbooks. But nobody is concerned with that. They might have been had it been the opposite case.
A few years ago Professor Humayun Azad wrote an article titled “Dhormanobhutir Upokotha” (Sentimentalism in religion and its folklore). He certainly raised some interesting questions in his article, which can be related to on-going issues today,
“There is a phrase which we hear constantly these days, something called ‘religious sentimentalism’. Usually the phrase isn’t alone. It tends to be accompanied by the words ‘bruise’ and ‘’scathe”, which form into the words ‘hurt religious sentiment’ or ‘scathed religious sentiment’. It seems today a lot of people are being hurt and being scathed over something called ‘religious sentimentalism’. Mankind is a sensitive species; they have as many emotions as flowers have pollen; deprived of entry into heaven human beings now live in a world worse than hell, where barbarism and tyranny are endless: as such, it is safe to assume that their fragile sentiments are being bled dry every day. When the day of salvation comes he will enter the heavens, where he will find true peace; where nobody will hurt his sentiments, no one will poke fun at it. There he will have all the luxuries he ever dreamed of. But the world is a stagnant place, his sentiment is being scathed here, being hurt here, being bled dry, it’s a sad truth altogether; but the brunt of the damage is being sustained by another completely different type of sentiment, which is frankly the stuff of myths or folklore for that matter. It’s called ‘religious sentimentality’.
Now humans ‘feel’ the universe around them with the help of five different senses. These senses enable humans to touch, hear, smell, see and taste the universe around them: but humans are also the only species who possess countless other ‘senses’ outside the naturally inherited ones; we can categorize our abilities to measure beauty or our ability to be creative which when combined, enables us to appreciate works of art. Similar to these senses and perhaps our most developed and effective one yet, is our ability to ‘sense’ religion. And today in this ever-growing world of our religious ‘senses’ and by extension our religious sentimentality, is being dented on a daily basis. Our religious sense is the prolific of senses in our arsenal today. It does not rest, it does not stop, it constantly guards our religious sentimentality; if under attack it responds with physical stimuli just like any other sensory organ would. And sometimes it agitates us enough so that we spring into action. Unlike other ‘senses’, when hurt, it is capable of inducing anger and become vengeful. The world today shakes in fear of the unpredictability and vindictiveness of religious sentimenmtality.”
Our country today vehemently celebrates religion, the blind faith and the ignorance that accompanies it. And yet we abstain ourselves from understanding science, when it has helped us cross oceans, build bridges and with no help mind you from some prophet or a religious publication. All we need to do to understand it is keep our eyes and ears open. Again not to be repetitive, we constantly chose to lead our lives without committing to this this simple task. Under pressure from religious sentimentalism, schools and colleges today refrain from teaching the theory of evolution to children. They have stopped printing it in Biology textbooks when much of the study of biology itself is based on this theory. Our religious sentimentality tirelessly works to decide what we should see , what we should read, what we should listen to and what we shouldn’t listen to.
Government sponsored media outlets in the country have already stopped criticizing religion as a whole. But what about the internet? Isn’t it necessary to stop it there? The sentries guarding religious sentimentality thus became concerned. They are so deeply entangled in the country’s affairs after all. These sentries have no trouble belittling those of other faiths all day and night long, but tendency to feel abashed whenever someone on FaceBook types up an article criticizing the very thing they are supposed to protect. Do they actually, honestly feel abashed?

No, they don’t. But their superiors do. You see these sentries have superiors and these superiors by extension run organizations. Nothing in this country is more powerful than organizations and that is why the government gives them freedom and breathing space. The government is not concerned with overall development or technological advancements. It’s more concerned about the minority whose religious sentimentalities have been hurt, and that is something that can prompt the government into immediate action. As such, activities on the internet are under constant surveillance. The internet as a whole is being slowly pushed under the vicelike grip of “religious censorship”.

Why the notion of faith is equivalent to poison. Part-5

Why is religion criticised?
Why do humanitarian and rational thinkers tend to heavily criticise religion? They do so because criticism must be made where criticism is due. And there is nothing in this word which does not warrant a different opinion, be it economics or a newly discovered theory in chemistry and by extension, however sacred or divine a verse from Allah may be. On the whole the entire foundation of religious belief has been erected on a bundle of lies. Religion today refers to unscientific thinking, a collection of narrow minded superstitions and their constituencies which have degraded, failing to survive the test of time. Another reason why religion comes under such intense scrutiny is because of the violence portrayed in religious books. These books are nothing like rich literary works such as the Gitanjali or Shonchoyita which we can read in our leisure and then prop them up on bookshelves and then just forget about them! No, instead these books are followed to the letter by enthusiasts looking to appease ‘God’, and then implement them on to the society in general. Take the case of ‘Satidaha’ for example, an abhorrent Hindu ritual where if the husband of a woman dies, the woman gets burned to death alive to join her husband in the afterlife. In between 1815 to 1826 alone, 8126 women fell prey to the ‘Satidaha’ system. And who can forget the recent burning of Rup Kanoa, a girl burned alive in Rajasthan 1987, with raucous slogans of “Sati ma ki jai!” (All hail the Sati Ma/widow!). The whole village watched as the girl burned to death and didn’t even flinch. And why should they? They’re faith will become tainted if they try anything! It is said that you’ll be cleansed of all your sins if you read the Mahabharat and also if you watch girls like Rup Kanoa, burn to death vis-à-vis are live spectators to Satidaha. In truth, these ‘moderate Hindus’ can’t be bothered to even read their own religious books properly. Many Hindus don’t even know that there are clear instructions for widows to burn themselves alive in the very pyre their husbands are cremated on, after death that is. For example, on the 10th mondol of the Rigvedas, no 18/7 clearly states :
The verse roughly translates to –
“Let these women, whose husbands are worthy and are living, enter the house with ghee (applied) as collyrium (to their eyes). Let these wives first step into the pyre, tearless without any affliction and well adorned.”
On the Orthoved there lies the verse :
“We’ve seen living widows practice how to become brides for the dead. (18/2/1,3).”
On the Porashor Shanghita, I found :
“The human body is roughly coated in of 3 million strands of hair. If a woman follows her husband into the afterlife after his death, she shall have 33 years with him in heaven. (4:28)”. Verse no. 4/18-19 of the Dokyho Shonghita states, “Those Sati women who willingly embrace the flames, will be worshipped in heaven”. Immediately after that in the in the Dokhyo Shonghita, is verse no. (5:160), “Those women who chose to burn in their husbands’ pyres, will cleanse the hopuse of their inlawas as well as her own.”
Satidaha actually is yet another by-product of the Hindu religious books, even though everyone vehemently denies the fact today. Satidaha is a prime example of how viciously enchanting religion can be for people. Perhaps that is why Pascal was heard saying “Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction”. How true these words are. Think about it for a second – an alive and healthy woman struggling against her binds, desperate to escape the flames. She is forcefully kept at bay, fed opium like substances to keep under control, poked with sharp sticks to climb the pyre where she will be roasted alive, what a magnificent example of humanity! Every day I see newspapers littered with articles of countless Safias and Aminas who lose their lives falling victim to the rules of the “Shariya”. And yet incurably infatuated with religion and religious books, ‘moderate’ devotees of religion still desperately seek to extract peace, ‘progression’ and tolerance from it.
But it is undeniable that there are reasonably approvable verses present amongst these religious publications (I am sure no one including me has any qualms with them): the believers base their pride on these clusters of good verses and perceive them as key moral compasses. But if we analyse them from the vantage points of someone slightly more sceptic – we’ll discover that those verses of love, peace and tolerance that are attached like ad labels on religious books and their promoters, are nothing new and certainly aren’t something new or unheard of before. Take Leviticas for example, who said “Love your neighbours the way you love yourself”. His words came 500 years before Jesus Christ was even born. Scriptures in the Quran and the Bible which teach patience for example have already been covered by Confucius (that too 500 years before Christs’s Birth), “Do not exhibit the kind of behaviour with others, you yourself would find inacceptable”. Isocrates said (375 years before the birth of Christ) “Do not seek to exhibit the type of behaviour that angers you, in front of others”. There are instruction to be caring towards you enemies even in Taoism and in Buddhism, and all that before the inception of Christ and Muhammad.
As such, these moral and ethical values taught in religion, that the believers champion and refer to as gifts passed down to them by their forefathers, are nothing but unprecedented results of the evolution of socio economic structures throughout the ages. To maintain a certain degree of order in society, human kind has always endeavoured to adopt and implement a handful of moral traits and values. Because society would have collapsed dramatically otherwise. Infamous anthropologist Soloman Ash has said –
“I am yet to see a society where bravery is derided upon, and cowardice is respected: I am also yet to see kindness interpreted as a sin and ungratefulness accepted as a virtue”.
The sad truth is we also do not know if a society like that exists or not, because we wouldn’t last two days in a place like that. Now one obviously doesn’t need heavenly intervention to be convinced that stealing is a crime against society. But if a society sees stealing as glamorous act as opposed to a crime that society, we can agree, is doomed to collapse. As such we can probably compare and differentiate with the alternative i.e. if lying is encouraged instead of advocating for the truth, it will be next to impossible to maintain a satisfactory link between one human and the other. And believe me you don’t need religious dictums to comprehend the gravity of these matter. Of course there are countless examples of campaigns against century old customs and rituals, at times to either change them or stop them completely. In most cases these changes where brought about by men and women who did it for humanitarian reasons, not paying heed at all to what religion has to in the matter. The abolition of slavery is an appropriate example. It is to be noted that no religious book in the world supports or for that matter mentions anything about the dissolution of slavery. The Old Testament or the New Testament of the Bible, the Quran, the Veda, the Uponishod or the Munshinghota - none speak about the rescission of slavery in fact, some instruct to preserve it. But eventually it was up to mankind to take matters into their own hands and for humanitarian reasons abolish slavery, just as the Hindus had to stop the Satidaha system and the Christians had to stop burning ‘witches’. There have been rapid changes in the world in the last few decades alone, in opinions on issues such as the abolition of the Satidaha system, homosexuality or the right to abortion. A lot of these changes did not win a seal of approval from religion or its constituencies.

Why the notion of faith is equivalent to poison. Part-4

What exactly are religious books trying to tell us?
All popular contemporary religious beliefs today, where established roughly 2 to 4 thousand years ago. Under these circumstances it cannot be argued that Islam Christianity and Hinduism “eternally” existent. The concept of “eternally” existent religion is a misguided belief. However eternal or otherwise, it is true that the “creation” of religion is a process that was initiated many thousands of years ago. One particular scenario where mankind might have felt the need for “Godly” interventions, are natural disaster. Mother Nature can be cruel at times with an ugly assortment of weapons at her disposal to vent her rage whenever she feels like it. Desperate men and women unable to properly explain (and in a bid to save themselves) the phenomenon behind tornadoes, thunderstorms and floods turned to the alternative explanation of a deity, Gods/Goddesses behind these occurrences. Unable to define death satisfactorily, many resorted to the concept of spirits or unseen souls. Those slightly practiced in the trade of social sciences may have come across all these things. As such based on what we have gathered so far, it is evident that religion or religious faith are nothing but the creation of Neanderthal humans who ruled the world some two hundred and fifty thousand years ago. Before the Neanderthals there was no evidence of practicing religion found during the age of the Pithecanthropus or even the Sinanthropus before them. But the findings of the Neanderthals lacked sophistication - compared to modern beliefs that is. The upper Palaeolithic age (some 40 -98 thousand years ago) saw the concepts spirits, ghosts, religious behaviour and the practice of magic added and integrated into an already growing pile. In comparison to modern religion the Veda religion (predecessor to Hinduism) for example was conceived some 3,500 years ago, while Islam and Christianity were conceived 1400 and 2000 years ago respectively. The religious rules and regulation maintained out of the need to preserve social order and harmony during those days are largely recognized today as being weak, suppressive and even barbaric at times. History again is the silent eyewitness to the Phonicans, Hebrew, Cananights, Mayans, Incans, Aztecas, wolmex, Greek, Roman Carthagian, Tewton, Celts, droid, Gall, Thai, Japanese, the Mauris, Tahitians and the Hawaian citizens, all of whom have “sacrificed” countless men, women and children in order to satisfy these invisible entities they refer to as Gods and Goddesses. I have explored these issues in broader detail on the “Poisonous Faith” section on my book. For now let us focus on these books, these religious manuals if you will and try and determine they message they are trying to convey. Formed, moulded and firmly established by modern religion today we undertake a no holds barred approach to analyse their content and decode the mysteries behind the words.
For those who have memorized or are familiar with The Quran’s content, know for a fact that it has numerous provocative directives strewn all over its pages. For example –
And wherever you find non-believers kill them (2:191, 9:5), get into conflicts with them, so that you may demonstrate hostile behaviour against them (9:123), engage in war against them (8:65). Humiliate the non-believers at every opportunity and impose the “Zizia” tax on them (9:29). And retract the freedom of those who believe other things, and announce that Islam is the only adoptable religion (3:85). This condemns non-believers to hell (5:10), and brands them as ‘unholy’ (9:28); Muslims are encouraged to carry on fighting till all manners of other beliefs are eradicated and Islam is the only religion that exists (2:193). The Koran says that it is only in Islam that a non-believer will be condemned to hell because of the stature he/she maintains, and he/she will be forced to drink pungent smelling pus (18:17). You are encouraged to slice off the hands and legs of non-believers, you are encouraged to dishonourably discharge them from their countries, “There are unimaginable horrors waiting for them in afterlife” (5:38). “For those who did not believe, I have made clothes for them weaved from fire, steaming, boiling water will be poured on their heads so that skins and their stomachs melt, and iron clubs will be used to beat them” (22:19). The Koran explicitly prohibits Muslims from even befriending a Nasar or a Jew (5:51), it even has instructions encouraging you to sever all ties your mother or father if they are non-believers (9:23, 3:28). For those who do not believe in Allah-Rasul, for them a burning pyre is reserved (48:13). For those who die without believing in Islam, state – “wring him by the neck, bind him up and then throw him to the pits of hell. Use chains as long as 70 feet in length to bind him” (69:30-33). It has instructions to commit to warfare in order to appease Allah, where it says “It is good for us, even if we don’t like it, it is” (2:216), and also – “slay the neck of all Kafirs” and immediately after that blood-soaked instruction it says “and bind them up properly” (47:4). Next up is a section where Allah himself has vowed – “I will induce fear into the heart of all Kafirs” and he has specifically instructed believers to “strike Kafirs on their shoulders and to break each and every finger on their hands” (8:12).
Allah has made Jihad mandatory for the ‘Mumin’ and has warned them that, “if you do not willingly engage in Jihad, the most heinous of punishments await you” (9:39). Allah has instructed his beloved Prophet, “Oh prophet, campaign against non-believers and be stern against them - for only the deepest recesses of hell awaits them” (9:73).
Dear readers, those are just some of the words that constitute The Quran (forget delving into other religious publications for while). Those inundated by their sense of blind faith have dubbed the Quran as ‘the book of guidance’, and have declared Islam as the ‘religion of peace’. It is to those that I pose this question, have you ever wondered if anybody took the above mentioned verses ‘as guidance’ and acted upon them, what sort of “peace” he/she will bring to this world? Thanks to the principles of Jihad ‘Islamic terrorism’ is a well-established term today. Every day the newspapers bear some report or the other describing men or women inspired by the edicts of Jihad, resort to bombing people, open streets, houses, factories, transport, cinema halls, cultural establishments or on the seas or oceans. About a thousand Jihadi groups such as – Al Qaeda, Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Harkat-Ul-Jihad, Harkat-Ul-Mujahidin, Jammat-E-Islamia, Hijab-E-Islamia, Ansaralluah Bangla Team have managed to envelope the world in a never-ending fog of fear.
The Bangladesh government has banned a few groups such as the Hizbut-Tahri over allegations of terrorism. Before that happened the BNP-Jamat coalition government managed to ban the Jamaitul Mujahidin (JMB), Harkat-Ul-Jihad-Al-Islami Bangladesh (HUZI) during their reign; Shahadat-E-Al-Hikma and the Jagroto Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) were also banned during their reign due to similar allegations. Harkat-Ul-Jihad first came under the radar of Bangladesh during the year 1996. On the 29th of February that, a joint operation between the police and army, led to the capture of 41 Harkat-Ul-Jihad terrorists along with a raft of guns, bombs and ammunition. They were arrested from the Lundakhali Jungle which is attached to the Painkhali village of Uthia, Cox’s Bazar. The group consisted of one foreigner whilst the other forty were comprise of Madrasa students and teachers from all parts of the country. After that on 18th January 1999, during an attack on poet Shamsur Rahman, a total of ten 10 terrorists were arrested, some right from the scene of crime (Shamsur Rahman’s house) and some later from the other areas. They all claimed to be a part of Harkat-Ul-Jihad. And again during the Udichir ceremony in Jessore, on the 23rd July 2000 where bombs were planted in a general assembly held in Gopalgonj Kotalipara set to be attended by none other than the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and of course who can forget 14th April 2001 in Dhaka Ramna, or the grenade attack of 21st August or the 17th August 2005 serial grenade attack all over the country. With these horrifying deeds the Harkat-Ul-Jihad forced themselves into the centre of all diplomatic conversations.
However the 17th August bombings in 2005, surpass their entire list of obscenities by quite a margin. Readers perhaps many of you remember the horrors of that day. A series of synchronized bombs went off across 63 zillas in Bangladesh. The day was unanimously declared as the blackest spot in the country relatively brief history and was dubbed as Bangladesh’s ‘9/11’. It was evident just how sinister the link between terrorism and “pure” Islam was after a visit was paid to the places whre the bombs set off. The streets there where littered from top to bottom with leaflets and pamphlets , bearing verses from the Quran and Hadith, specifying instructions to go into Jihad or wage war against Kafirs and non-believers. And despite the feeble attempts of people like Farhad Majhar and Badruddin Umra to deny the relationship between pure Islam and terrorism, it was all in vain. Even though the government then oversaw the expulsion of 5 terrorist groups, another 70 strong ones had joined them in secret. Together they are intimating every possibility to cause as much disruption in the country’s affairs as possible. Their main objective of course is to hinder and destabilise the war criminal trials in Bangladesh as much as possible.
It is time for the peace-loving, pious and socially conscious people to undergo a bit of self-realization, and ask from a sceptic’s point of view – Why are all terrorist groups extreme Islamists? Why are they ‘terrorists’ at all’? Who’re the ones responsible for the gradual rise of the Molla Omars, the Bin Ladens, Moulana Mannan, Golam Azam, Sheikh Abdur Rahman, Mufti Hannan and the Bangla Bhais? It’s time to come out of all this obscurity and state with razor sharp clarity that these religious books are at the very root of terrorism. Of course we can add in the imperialistic mind frame of the US in conjunction with that of the Western world and of course, the malevolent foreign policies maintained against the Middle East should not be forgotten as well.
The non-existence of weaponized WODs, or the figmental link between Saddam and Al-Qaeda, or the failure to establish that Iraq was housing biological weapons and then mercilessly trampling through their landscape, America’s imperialistic aspirations was there for the world to see. And the Islamic world meanwhile interpreted the Iraqi war as a ‘hostile blow against Islam’, for one reason or the other. As such if we analyse with raw statistics, we will find that that countries with the largest number of suicide bombing since the Iraqi war, are ran by governments who shamelessly supported the Bush-Blair agenda. And it doesn’t stop there. Isolating the Palestines and supplicating Israel over the years has also riled the larger Islamic community, leading them down a dangerous path where only conflict seems to be the viable solution. It wouldn’t be prudent to ignore all these political elements and their reactions and this constant blood thirst for revenge while conducting these discussions. It won’t be too irrelevant perhaps to introduce another related matter here. I am talking about the USA of course who are naturally gifted in nurturing fundamentalism by utilising religion as a tool, while simultaneously possessing the uncanny ability to spot the perfect opportunity to provoke it. Whether or not scientist should research on stem cells, whether or not artificially assembled defence weapons should be withdrawn, whether the theory of evolution ought to be taught in schools, if so how should it be approached. Everything from the biggest to the smallest of aspects is being quietly micromanaged by the government. Government sponsored priests and preachers are asked to lend their expert opinions or supervise scientific research or a particular project for that matter. Their job being is to determine if the relevant proceedings are ethical or non-ethical. Perhaps the president there had an epiphany like the prophets and heard the “the voice of God” before going into battle; the media meanwhile, in conjunction with major newspaper outlets and influential editors sought to ‘decide’ what to believe on behalf of us and later, decide what to pack away and bury deep. In all honesty, by projecting a false ‘impression’ of a free world, this group of power-hungry, uber rich zealots are trying to impose a measure of control over the society’s demands, its tastes and its emotions in general. But that in itself is another long story.
Now although ‘US Imperialism’ does pose a problem, Islamic terrorism mainly originates from Islam itself. History here is witness again here and this time to the Prophet Muhammad and his antics on 624 B.C against the Bani Kuyanuka, the Bani nadir in 625 B.C. and the Jewish tribe of Bani Quraiza in 627 B.C., all of whom he attacked and then exterminated. He murdered 700 hundred Jews of Bani Kunayuka in one morning alone, while the Bani Quraiza saw between 800 to 900 people murdered, even after they had surrendered. The horrors of these incidents were so pronounced, that even Karen Armstrong, a revered figure amongs the Muslim community, was forced to compare it with ‘Nazi barbarism’. Many researchers have constantly pointed out with proof, as to how terrorists such as Bin Laden, Bangla Bhai, Golam Azam and Mohammed Ata adopt then imitated Islam down to the very last verse, before using it as an excuse to justify their actions. Readers, if you wish to know more about these things, I would like to take the liberty to refer you to a book published on ‘Mukto Mona’ – ‘Je Shotto Bola Hoini’ by Akash Malik.
Even after all this there are some who choose to ignore historical facts and reality for that matter, and blatantly point fingers at America as the main catalyst behind Islamic borne terrorism. Noam Chomosky has penned a few articles describing and then analysing American imperialism, and is well recognized in Bangladesh and other Muslim dominated countries. On one instance he offers, “America itself is a terrorist infested country. That is exactly why an attack the scale of 9/11 managed to land on their shores”. News host for CNN and editor for News Week International Mr Fareed Zakaria published a book in 2007 titled ‘Bhabishyoter Shadhinota’. There he goes on to state, “Should we strive to find the main reason behind Islamic terrorism, it would be the failure of American policies in the Middle-East”. Philosopher Sam Harris offered a rebuttal, “That may be, but if Muslim terrorism is an escalating problem, then the main problem lies within the fundamentals of Islam itself”.
One of the biggest problems of discussing matters related to religion, terrorism and fundamentalism is the fear of ‘stereotyping’. For if it’s seen that once a discussion about Islamic terrorism for example takes place, the believers tend to pose, “Why is that the greater Islamic community is looked down upon and branded as terrorists, due to the action of a handful of men such as Bin Laden or Mufti Hannan? Do you truly think they are true representatives of our religion?”
No, it’s true they are not.
As such, I have no qualms in stating that it is unwise to brand the entire Islamic community as a band of terrorists, and those who tend to indulge in such ‘stereotyping’ are making a big mistake. Actually I can go as far as describing this as another form of racism! Some however have come up with the clever term of ‘Islamophobia’, implying it to be a disease. Be it a disease or be it contempt on the Western world’s behalf (the late Edward Sayd re-entitled this contempt into ‘orientalism’), after the events of 9/11 Muslims residing within the western world have been subjected to all kinds of psychological and physical abuse, a fact which is undeniable. We don’t need hear about ornate ideals to recognize that not every Muslim is a ‘terrorist’. Our common sense and personal experiences should suffice in this case. I myself have befriended many Muslims. Nonje of them are terrorists. None of them are Bin Ladens or Mufti Hannans. They tend to me whenever I am going through difficult times, we get together and spend time, we eat and drink together sometimes, and at times they ask me which way is east, so that they may engage in Namaz (prayer) even at this “Kafir’s” house. All in all they are decent human beings. For one they are not aware of the Quran’s more violent verses, nor are they interested in sifting through them. They practice something called ‘spiritual Islam’. See people like them were never the problem. They champion peace and love and believe in patience. But the difference is these qualities have been cultivated in them from their childhoods some admittedly through Islam, but most of them through proper social grooming. There are countless examples of those who’ve never even seen the Quran nor have practiced in the ways of Islam but at the same time, are not devoid of these qualities. And then there are those who refuse to accommodate an alternative solution and tend to memorize the Quran and its directives by heart. They’re the ones who want to do everything according to the Quran and want to build a world based on Islamic ideology only. And that is exactly what the problem is. If a person completely refuses to learn from the social infrastructure and just blindly bases his faith on a limited set of instruction (that being the Quran) what will happen then? Let us take a look at one of the verses in Sura Al-Imran –
“Mumins (Muslims) are encouraged to only befriend other Mumins. Those who befriends Kafir’s or non-Muslims, Allah will cease all ties with them (3:28).”
Those who maintain that the Quran’s does not have a violent side, and want to use it as the very foundation to lead their lives I ask, have you ever acted the way the Quran explicitly instructs you to with your Hindu, Christian or non-Muslim neighbour? Do you decline someone’s friendship just because he is a non-Muslim or a person with another faith?
If not, well, then you are not in sync with the Quran’s mandated etiquettes. And isn’t the Quran “Allah’s Book”? If so, if one chooses to cease this insipid on and off practice of Islam and really, I mean really adopt the Quran as a way life, what happens when he grows in to another ‘Taliban-esque’ figurehead? Whose fault will it be then?
A verse in Surah Al Baqara offers –
“I’ve made war ‘Faraz’ (responsibility) for you, and yet you dislike it. In parallel there may be other things that you may not agree with, but they may bear well for you. (2:216)”
There is another one in Surah Al Nasr which says –
“Keep waging war for Allah, you are not accountable for anything apart from you well-being! Encourage other Muslims to do so. Soon Allah will diminish the strength and power of the Kafirs. And above all Allah is exceedingly stern when it comes to enacting punishment (4:84).”
True to these provocative words from the Quran, and riled by Jihad mixed adrenaline, many jumped at the chance to fight shoulder to shoulder with the Taliban in Afghanistan, and wage war against the Jews and the Nasaras. They thought that all they were doing was following Allah’s rules and guidelines. And in many ways they cannot be blamed. On an 18th October 2005 issue of The Daily Prothom Alo in Bangladesh, there was a report which claimed that about 3000 Madrasa students and teachers were “inspired” by the Harkat-Ul-Jihad in the 1980s, to travel to Afghanistan and take on the Soviet army. The fact that the Quran is liable for cultivating this unreasonable hatred towards “Kafirs” in Madrasa students, is irrevocable. And those who choose to deny it are simply deluded and ignorant. Every time I try and indulge myself in this sensitive issue, the events of 9/11 tend to float its way into the discussion. The world stopped and grimaced in horror at the deedss of a handful of Jihadi fanatics, who managed to convert entire aeroplane into a weapon and claim thousands of innocent lives. Those who practice Islam for peace will argue that this is work of those who are beguiled and nurture misguided ideals. Not only are they not in sync with what Islam actually is, but they are deluded into thinking that they are pure Muslims, who have only strived to execute Allah’s will to the word. Before 9/11 ever happened, the 11th of January 1999 issue of the News Week published an interview conducted with Osama Bin Laden. In that interview Mr Bin Laden clearly explained why he thinks that killing each and every American is “Jayez” (right deed). For the benefit of the readers, I have chosen to provide snippets of that conversation. Take a look –
QUESTION: Why have you asked Muslims to target civilian Americans all over the world? Islam prohibits its followers from killing civilians in war?
BIN LADEN: If the Israelis are killing small children in Palestine and the Americans are killing the innocent people in Iraq, and if the majority of the American people support their dissolute president, this means the American people are fighting us and we have the right to target them.
QUESTION: All Americans?
BIN LADEN Muslim scholars have issued a fatwa [a religious order] against any American who pays taxes to his government. He is our target, because he is helping the American war machine against the Muslim nation.
As far as Hinduism goes, Islam is acutely critical. And they have every reason to be. For the instigator of poisonous caste system which has continued to rot away inside India for the last 3000 years, is none other than God himself! From the Munshonghita we discovered – that alimight God created the Brahmins from his mouth, the Kshatriyas from his shoulders, The Baishyas from his thigh and the Shudryas from his feet (1:31). Believers vehemently claim that everyone is the same in the eyes of God. And yet, God’s decision to create Brahmins from his mouth and the Shudryas from his feet is seen as a noble act! Everyone today is aware of the maltreatment of the Shrudyas and other ‘lower caste Hindu’ sects, at the hands of the ‘high class’ Brahmins who after all were created from “God’s mouth”. At every rich houselhold the man or maid servant is always employed from one of the a lower castes. Monu further went on to state – God created the Shrudyas to serve as slaves (8:413). After these ‘lower caste’ servants had finished their work and left for the day, the household in question was ‘cleansed’ by gathering and sprinkling ‘holy’ water from the Ganges (in some households this ritual still exists). And why shouldn’t it exist? After all ‘lower caste’ p[people cannot be deemed fit enough to be human beings? They are all but ‘Acchuts’ (untouchables). According to Sri M.C. Raja, “You have no qualms in keeps pets in your households, no qualms in drinking the urine from cows or even resort to drape yourself cow faeces in a bid to get rid of your sins, but are reluctant to even step on the shadow of a lower caste Hindu! Are these the moralities that govern Hinduism?” Moreover according to Hindu rites, Shudryas don’t even have any proprietary rights to their own hard earned money/assets. Everything accumulated should go to his/her employee, that was the rule laid down by Monu – “ন হি তস্যাস্তি কিঞ্চিত স্বং ভর্ত্তৃহার্যধনো হি সঃ’ (8:416)”. The Shrudyas were pitiful examples of social negligence. Not only were they stripped of any rights as citizens, theye were stripped of any religious or economic rights as well. The Shudryas were kept in a way so that they could be distinguished from the other three castes and they were reminded constantly that they were created as slaves in order to be serve the other three castes. To further differentiate the Shrudyas from the other three, Monu even instructed that the Shrudyas have all the hair from their heads shaved off once every month (5:140). As far as learning the Veda goes, they are banned from even listening to others reading it let alone practice it themselves. They are not even permitted to marry anyone above their caste group. If a Shrudya by some mistake perches himself on a place where his Brahmin master had formerly occupied or currently occupies, there are instructions to either poke him with melting hot steel rods or use them to make incision on his back, as statutory punishment of course (8:281).
We found scores of examples in the Ramayana and the Mahabharat where Monu’s grossly racist practices came into life. The use of religious edicts and scriptures to create a gulf between the different castes of people was especially noticeabale and in particular, the brunt of that abuse was bore by the Shrudyas who were usually on the receiving end. Take the Ramayana’s Shambukbhod story. Charged with the ‘crime’ of meditation, a Shrudya by the name of Shambuk got himself killed by none other than Ramchandra himself, who used a trumpet to behead him. All this happened during his ‘Ramrajya’ (reign).
A similar incident is recorded in the Mahabharat where the Aklavya, the son of Nishadraj Hironnodhanu, approached the Dronacharjya to learn the art of swordsmanship. Drona however rejected him on grounds that he was a lower caste human being. Afterwards Aklavya did learn his trade elsewhere and learned it well. But the Drona partly jealous of his abilities and in part to maintain the reputation Arjun, one of his very own as the best archer in the kingdom, resorted to cut off one of Aklavyas fingers using ‘Guru Dakshina’ (a token you have to pay whenever you visit you teacher/master) as an excuse. These ancient religious publications are littered with countless examples such as the ones above.
This brand of of ‘organized’ religious practices in ancient times, managed to severely disturb the very equilibrium of the social infrastructure, creating huge gulfs between different classes of people. However we look at it, religion was the chief architect in giving birth to artificial anomalies such as the “Huzur” (religious master/teacher/expert) class, who were determined from the offset to use religion as a weapon to meet the ends of their selfish needs. Ignorance and of course a lack of knowledge thus paved the way for social and economic “leeching”. To ensure the continuity of such a process – the Brahmins resorted to promoting that all religious books were created by God from his mouth. They claimed God has specifically instructed to maintain an identifiable difference between various castes of people! One glance at the subcontinent’s political prowess over the years, will tell you that these religious discrepancies are still put to use today. All do it of course bearing God as their witness.
Not unlike the Jihadists it’s all hands on deck for the political juggernauts in India as well, the BJP for one, Congress, ‘Bisshohindu Parishod’, Shib-Sena and Bajrang Dol to name a few, all striving to preserve ‘eternal religion’ and consequently continue to stretch the gap between the various castes and groups in society. Even a few decades ago there was no definite form or shape to this type of practice in Hinduism. But deceitful knowledge or a complete lack of it altogether, combined with this inexplicably blind faith on religion, has paved the way for the commoners to be hoodwinked by groups like the Shannashis, Geruas,, the Jatas, Dandas, Rudrakhyas and Kumunduls for generations. Now, those who are a bit more sagacious in the art of politics are well aware of people’s irreversible enchantment towards religion. Perhaps to further feed this sentimentalism towards religion, Durdarshan channel was sponsored by the government to air the Mahabharat and Ramayana in their channel from the year 1998-1990. Perhaps the government’s naivety in sugar coating the blind faith in religion people have, provided the perfect opportunity for fundamentalism and communism to plant their poisonous seeds. While the fictional Ram championed fundamentalism to orchestrating campaigns to take back his homeland in Durdarshan’s Ramayana, 1992 followed with the inception and initiation of terrorist superpowers through the destruction of the Babri Mosque. Jayantanuz Bandhapaddhay in his book “Mohakabbo O Moulobad” had this to say on the matter –
“Unfortunately, instead of treating the Mahabharat and Ramayana as an information rich treasury on ancient civilization and culture or as invaluable pieces of literature, their respective messages are being wrongly twisted to funnel fundamentalism and promote communism in politics. And therein lays our greatest embarrassment. First it was from 19880-1990, and then after the Ramayana and Mahabharat had been re repeated a few times and the way it was portrayed as well, with simplicity and yet with a certain amount of vindication, further fuelled fundamentalism in to our politics in my opinion. The Ramatan aired in Durdarshan, was primarily based on Tulsi Das’s book titled ‘Ramcharit Manash’, not on the ‘Balmiki’ Ramayan. Tulsi Das’s Ramayan is a biproduct of the Vaishnava Padavali movement (refers to a period in medieval Bengali literature from the 15th to 17th centuries) and mainly recounts the consequences of medieval worship. The early Balmiki Ramayana did not consist of ‘Balkada’ or ‘Uttarkanda’. Later on apart from these two sections in the early Balmiki Ramayana and of course any of their related constituents, there aren’t that many accounts of Ram’s antics in the book. But the main objective of the Tulsi Das version was to establish Vishnu as the almighty all powerful deity and that Ram was merely an avatar that represented him, which does not match the main agenda of the ‘Balkanda’ and the ‘Uttarkanda’ in the original early Ramayana. Yet the early Balmiki version gained praise as an intricately woven piece of literary delight. The Tulsi Das version aired on Durdarshan’s screen on the other hand, presented a perverted version of the original work, distorted to make it more ‘avatar-centric’ and decorated with religious opulence. Thus it is logical to assume that the government ‘sponsorship’ of this blind faith in religion, in turn has proved to be the catalyst which has paved the way for fundamentalism and communism to sneak into the nation’s politics. Durdarshan’s Ramayana portraying Ram who utilizing fundamentalist movements to regain his homeland, is irrefutable proof.
As to how worse things can get - the Gujarat conflicts in 2002 are prime examples. They remain etched in history as reminder of how religion can cloud your sense of judgement and turn you into monsters. And yet, whenever someone criticizes religious practices as the reason behind these obscenities, fundamentalists and even progressives sometimes strive to oppose him!
Now moving on, if we take a look at the Jewish and Christian religious publications, the Bible in particular is strewn with incidents where there were murders committed, women raped and hooliganism practiced, all validated ‘in the name of God’. It wouldn’t be prudent not to provide a few examples. After they’d won the war and claimed prisoners, Musa ordered to kill all the men amongst them. An order, he claimed, that came directly from God,
“And kill all the boys and men. And kill the women who are married, but save those who aren’t for yourselves (Gonons Pustak, 31:17:18).”
One consensus revealed that about a 100,000 men and 68,000 women were slaughtered according to Musa’s wishes. But it does not stop there. There are even more aggressive, barbaric and downright evil collection of verses present in there. For example, “Jishayo (21:9), 1 Bangshabali (20:3), Gononona Pustak (25:3-4), Bicharkritigon (8:7), Gononoan Pustak (16:32-35), Ditio Biboron (12:29-30, 2 Bangshabali (18:9,18:12), Ditio Biboron (11:4-5), 1 samuel (6:19), Doyternomy (13:5-6, 13:8-9,13:15), 1 samuel (15:2-3), 2 Samuel (12:31), Jishayo (13:15-16), Adipustak (9:5-6)” etc, are scattered about in different sections.
Devout Christians of course tend to deny that the Bible itself is savage, and have blamed that most of the constellation of savage directives were found in the old Bible which was weaved by Jews (and derived from their religious book). All these discrepancies were sorted out after the birth of Christ and peace was established. That is not true.
According to the new Bible, Jesus Christ himself has declared quite clearly that he intends to conduct himself according to the laws laid down in the old Bible –
“Don’t think that I’m here eradicate the teachings of Mosi or the writing of the prophets before me. I have not come to repudiate them, but fulfil them.”
There are doubts as to how much of the loving caring person Jesus Christ is, as his devotees make him out to be anyway. Jesus has clearly said,
“Don’t think that I am here to establish peace in this world. No, I don’t want peace, but I want justice and I want establish laws by the sword. I have come to pit men against men, a son against his father, a daughter against her mother, and married women against their mother-in-laws. (Mothi, 10:34-35)”.
Not only did Christ seek to get rid of those who commit adultery, but he vowed not to spare their children even –

“And that is why I will throw her on the bed, and those who were her partners in crime if they do not deter from adultery themselves, I shall seek make life difficult for them. I shall kill their children. (Prokashito bakya 2:22-23)”.

Why the notion of faith is equivalent to poison. Part-3

Faith and poverty
Not only does blind faith render a person incapable of logic and reason, its virus like properties tend to have a general impact on an entire country’s economy it seems. In recent times many reports have been published linking religious faith to the poverty cycle in general. The results of the Gallup poll (published in 2010) expresses that the most economically challenged countries are those where there is a large number of religious following. When asked if religious has any serious implications in a country’s economy, the poll conducted in 2009 revealed that most poverty induced countries agreed with the notion that religious belief has serious effects on a country’s economy. Bangladesh’s name is on top of that list.
Following the findings established in the Gallup poll, The New York Times published an editorial discussing the finer points of these discoveries. Columnist Charles Bloe wrote in the editorial –
A hundred countries were tested in the Gallup poll on 2009. It is evident from the resulting discoveries that religious faith and poverty share an intimate connection. The richer countries are less reliant on religion. In stark comparison the more economically handicapped nations are the ones were religion has deeper roots.
In contrast the USA for example which is an economically stable nation (gross GDP $46,000), where religion has telling influence on day to day affairs. Despite being the richest most entity in the world, its poverty rates are grouped with those of Mexico, Argentina and Chile. Now a strange anomaly such as this is still perfectly explainable. One of the biggest reasons of course is the ever blossoming imperialistic mind set. When a country the size and stature of the USA reaches the peak of its powers, in terms of military prowess that is, internal conflicts then seem inevitable and the ramifications tends to devalue (or deface/take the shine off if you will) a nation’s most influential or developed features. Something similar occurred with Greek and Roman empires at the end of their days. Besides that the recent boom of capitalism in America has sort of converted religion into a marketable entity.  For instance the various cultural festivals that are organized in honour of the Church there have managed to attract people who aren’t exclusively tied to religion in any way, the common men in other words. Starting from a simple Spring festival, right down to piano concerts performed by children are all Church centric. Apart from this “American Anomaly” and a handful of oil rich Middle Eastern countries, there seems to be a strong connection between religious faith and poverty in general. Once the development of renewable energy and other technology accelerates and price of oil plummets, it goes without saying that the Middle East will also be inflicted to the religion-poverty conundrum.
It’s intriguing how the rise of religious influence in a country is directly proportional to the gradual decline of its economy. Whereas countries which have little reservations for religion into their social system are opulent and found prosper. What’s the secret here?
Even to the naked eye it is abundantly clear. Again, not to be repetitive, but the trend of poverty is seen largely in nations who are grossly subservient to religion in every possible embarrassing way. That in turn provides incentives to terrorists and who use this infatuation as a weapon to create disharmony. Almost all third world countries demonstrate these similar traits. We can try and analyse this from the opposite angle as well. A slump in facets such as the literacy rate and technological advancements and indeed overall decline in general, coincides sharply with a country’s extreme diligence towards advocating religion and its other constituents. To be honest, it shouldn’t come as a shock. How can a country expect to be at the forefront of ‘development’ if it continues to favour religion and neglect all other duties and responsibilities associated with incremental improvement? The vice like grip of religion is tugging us behind it seems.
Is it possible for there to be a bleaker outcome borne from this, than our incessant obsession with religion?
Religion is a deadly poison
Whilst I was making the comparison with viruses, many might have assumed that it was primarily used to draw comparisons. However I used the term ‘virus’, both in a literal and figurative capacity. Sure, religion does not have biological form when compared to bacteria or viruses, but it acts and behaves like a virus in every other possible way. Professor Victor Stengor, in his book ‘God – The Folly of faith’, has identified 5 main characteristics shared by religion of all forms. They are as follows –
1)      It infects human minds.
2)      It festers and manufactures antibodies against those with different opinions (vis-à-vis different viruses).
3)      It immediately resorts to gain control over key psychological and physical aspects of a person. It then locks these features away in such a manner that it becomes impossible even for the person in question, to rediscover his lost facets.
4)      It utilizes some special techniques to spread the virus.
5)      The host is sort of ‘programmed’ to act and think in a way to suit the needs of the virus’s gradual propagation.
Another interesting comparison can be made with the common cold or flu. Children are known to be most susceptible to the cold or flu virus, because it is easier to inflict damage on the developing immune system of a child instead of a fully developed adult’s one. As such we tend to succumb to colds and flu more often than not during our childhood. It is this exact vulnerability during our youth, which religion as a virus utilizes to plant and then consequently subjugate us.
Children are the ones who are most commonly brainwashed, all in the name of teaching them “religious values”. Bangladesh’s Government Education Board for example, has recently renamed their year 9 and 10 Islamic textbook from “Religious education” to “Religion and moral education”. The book explicitly defines what a “Kufr” is and what a “Kafir” is amongst other directives, which are literally malevolent towards the society as a whole. The book classifies non-believers as ‘A-grade’ “Kafirs”. The book goes on to further describe them as ungrateful and as those who deserve no respect in this world. They are stubborn and rebellious, insidious and villainous and they are doomed to fail regardless of what they do. Page 53 of the same book meticulously discusses the mechanics of Jihad. Not only does it explore its definition, it goes on to list who you should go into ‘Jihad’ against and why, all in the name of protecting the legacy of Allah’s and his ‘deen’ Islam. The book does so with validated references.
Many of you might wonder, if you ever get the opportunity to read this book that is, as to why exactly people like Bin Laden, Bangla Bhai or Shaikh Rahman are branded as terrorists. Because in light of these teaching, these individuals only appear to be ‘carrying out the word’ of Allah. If you flounder about a bit longer into the deepest recesses of the book, you may also start to wonder if this book has been centred on Imam Al Ghazzali’s savage ideologies. For example he despised the Motaliz, a group of independent thinkers and philosophers within Islam and sought to destroy them completely. But it is regarding his notions on Jihad, that Al-Ghazzali delivered his most shocking directive till date. He said –
“Every Muslim should engage in Jihad at least once in their lives. Even if the conflict involves women and children, they can be attacked with large stones or with a bow and arrow. They can also be burned alive or drowned to death.”
As such it is perhaps evident as to how Gazzali and the Maududis tempestuously violent doctrines have groomed, reshaped and then corrupted the minds of young people. It is understood that in Pakistan children are taught that A is for Alif (the first letter of the Arabic alphabet) and B is for “Banduk” (meaning gun in English). As such it is unsurprising in many ways that a nation which houses such principles also breeds an army capable of murdering 3 million people and raping 200,000 women. After all, morning shows the day!

In truth religion needs to be identified as a virus, as a disease for that matter. Its parasitic capacities, its destructive capabilities should be made evidently clear. But the believers of course view it as a means to gain moral and ethical values.

Why the notion of faith is equivalent to poison. Part-2

Parasitic Infection
To understand how exactly parasitic religious beliefs can be to the conscious mind, we’ll have to delve into the world of biology for a bit. Here we shall explore some of the more common examples in detail. Some are already within our grasp –
·         Most of us are probably familiar with rabies or hydrophobia. This particular disease generally originates from animal bites with the most common occurrence being bit by a rabid dog. Now if we do not seek proper medical help immediately the rabies virus will latch onto our consciousness and fester thereafter. As a result our infected mind tends to function like that of a rabid dog in turn. The affected individual now is capable of infecting others around him as well. In a way virus renders us incapable of retaining control over our conscious minds.
Religion, tends to operate in a similar manner. Instead of biting other people it tends to utilise holy dictums or Jihadi manifestos to induce the virus into other people’s systems infecting them to the core, converting their normally healthy conscious into a suicidal maniac. That suicidal maniac in return drives a plane straight into the twin tower. Or on a day when it is particularly “inspired” it tends to seek and destroy, fishing out atheists like “Thaba Baba” for fun and then to murder them in cold blood, or as they put it to exact “justice”.
Virally infected thoughts
Time and again history has provided substantial evidence to incriminate how ‘belief’ once settled, has later morphed and mutated into the nuclear weapons which have wrought mass destruction upon this world, taking millions of innocent lives with it. Battles fought in the name religion are sufficiently gory illustrations themselves. Some of them include –
·         The first crusade which was assembled in the year 1905. That year thousands of people were slaughtered and countless more displaced in Rhine valley Germany because of ‘Deus Vult’ (God’s wishes). The entire population city of Jerusalem was nearly annihilated, all in the name of cleansing the city in order to make it “holy”.
·         The ‘Battle of Jamaal’ contested in ancient Arab, coincided with the death of nearly ten thousand Muslims. Muslims, dear readers, killed by other Muslims, their own brethren. The father of Islam Prophet Muhammad himself according to history is known to have been the slayer of about 700 prisoners, all hailing from the Bani Quraish.
·         According to the Bible (no. 31:16-18), Prophet Musa is responsible for the murders of about a 168,000 defenceless women.
·         During the third crusade, on the orders of Richard, three thousand prisoners- a congregation mostly comprised of women and innocent children were slaughtered without remorse. Ismaily Shia Muslims at one stage used to conduct covert operations to identify and kill those with other faiths and beliefs.  From the 11th to the 13th century many influential leaders in Iraq, Iran and Syria lost their lives. Their demise eventually came at the hands of the Mongols, considered a group of outright pirates themselves by history. But even that did little to veil their heinous crimes.
·         In the year 1209, by the order of pope innocent the III, a verbal crusade was launched against Albigensian Christians settled in northern France. After they seized the city the soldier sought advice from their superiors on how to segregate the ‘believers’ from the ‘non-beleievers’.  The Pope in turn supplied, “Kill everyone”. And with those two words, about twenty thousand people were dragged by horses, marched onto to a discrete location and obliterated without a second thought.
·         The Incas established their reign in Peru sometime during the 12th Century. They were led by a group of priests, who in order to execute a holy initiation of sort and to prove their devotion to God that is, sacrificed 200 children by burning them alive.
·         After Pope Innocent the III’s antics in 12th century, Albigensian “non-believers” across Europe, were hounded down like animals and murdered on sight. At times they were burned alive, at times poked to death with sharp weapons or simply beheaded. Pope Innocent the IV was thought to be the main instigator in this scheme. It is said that he ordered Robert Lee Borge, inquisitor for the mobile religious congregation, to kill 183 “non-believers” as it were, within one week.
·         When the ‘Black Death’, one of the most significant events in history was laying siege across Europe from 1348-1349, a rumour went around that it was because the Jews had mixed something poisonous in the water wells. Many Jews, based on this flimsy suspicion, where slaughtered to death mercilessly. In Germany particularly, many were burned alive and their bodies were stuffed into large alcohol boxes and floated down the Rhine River. North Germany saw Jews cluttered stiflingly into small compartments or rooms so that they die of suffocation. To accelerate the process they were lashed and whipped at times. The Thuringian prince announced that he had murdered his Jewish servant in the name of God of course, and he encouraged others to follow suit.
·         During the 1400’s, the Church redirected their attentions from “non-believers” to witchcraft. Many women were branded “witches” and burned alive by the Church’s orders. This ‘Witch Burning’ ritual at a point turned into mass hysteria in almost 12 countries in Europe but the question still remains as to how many women were actually murdered? The number could be anywhere between a hundred, to two hundred thousand. Villages, settlements were decimated all in the name of identifying and eradicating “witches”. During 10th century France, particularly in a province called Alsace, 5000 “witches” were burned alive. In Hamburg Bavaria, 900 hundred people perished under similar circumstances. This systematic elimination of witches all in the name of faith, had managed to eclipse all forms of religious barbarity in history up until that point.
·         On the other hand in 15th century India, the Kapaliks, devotees of the Goddess Kali, slaughtered human beings and offered them as sacrifice to the Goddess. This horrid ritual saw almost two hundred thousand people lose their lives. Till today this ceremony exists in many temples across the world. However due to the modernization of rules and regulations in society, priests are prohibited from sacrificing human beings. Thus instead, they take their frustrations out on innocent animals like a goat, in order to satisfy the blood thirsty Kali.
·         Once Anabaptists were chastened by Catholics and Protestant authorities. The Anabaptist successfully captured the city of Munster in Germany, establishing the “New Zion” in the process. In retaliation, the priests led an armed campaign against the Anabaptists. After they successfully took back the city, they murdered and strung Anabaptist leaders from the towers of the church.
·         The year 1801 saw Romanian priests lead a series of protestations against Jewish people, the result of which saw 128 Jews murdered without cause.
·         In 1988 when the Bahai arrived to preach their religion in Persia, a group of Islamic hardliners took offense in their action. In response they chose to imprison Bahai preachers and eventually kill them. Within the next two years, the fundamentalist government then residing over Persia, terminated nearly 20,000 Bahai. The streets of Tehran were quite literally bathed in blood.
·         During the British rule on the subcontinent in 1857, there was a rumour that went around claiming that the cartridges of the Enfield rifle are spiked with oil derived pig and cow fat. That instigated a harrowing chain reaction of incidents during which many innocent men were murdered without cause.
·         The battle of Christero in 1920 saw 90,000 Mexicans perish.
·         A conflict which raged between Christians, Animists and Muslims from 1950 to 1960, saw 500,000 people perish in between.
·         In Guyana Gerorgetown 1978, Reverend Jim Jones murdered a travelling congressman and three journalists. But after that, he along with 900 other people committed mass suicide. An event, which is regarded as one of the most shocking incidents in world history today.
·         Saudi Arabia in 1977 saw a young princess and her lover publicly executed for committing adultery. In Pakistan 1987 the daughter of a lumberjack was held culpable of committing “Zena”, and was ordered to be publicly executed by having stones thrown at her. In 1984, in an almost similar incident, a master and his maid servant were publicly executed on grounds that they were in an illicit relationship together.
·         In 1983 catholic terrorists invaded a Protestant Church and gunned down all the faithful within. Almost 2600 people lost their lives.
·         A series of suicide-bombing incidents in Lebanon 1975, saw almost 130,000 people lose their lives.
·         The conflict between the Buddhist Singholis and Hindu Tamils in the 1980s and 1990s respectively, quite literally converted Sri-Lanka in to pits of hell.
·         In India the Sikhs campaigned that that they be allocated a separate religious state in Punjab. They came to christen it as “Khalistan” (Land of the Pure). Led by one Jarnain Vrindanwala, a man governed by extremism himself, he famously taught his followers that it is their “holy duty” to condemn those that oppose them to the pits hell. The 80s saw many Hindus murdered discretely across India.
·         In 1989, controversy surrounding the writer of “Satanic Verses” one Salman Rushdi, prompted Ayatullah Khomeni, one of Iran’s most recognizable religious figures issued a “fatwa” (religious dictum) against him. The worldwide Islamic community meanwhile demanded his head in a platter without even reading his book properly. It is not new for people to receive rash but credible death threats because of the issues they raised against Islam. People like Monsur Al Hazzaz, Ali Dasti, Aziz Nesin, William Negard, Nagib Mahfuz, Taslima Nasrim, Dr. Younous Shaikh, Robert Hussain and Ayan harsi ali to name a few, have all been harassed to the point of being actually murdered in some cases, or forced to flee their countries out of fear for their lives.
·         In California USA 1997, a ‘UFO’ religious group called “Heaven’s Gate”, committed mass suicide in an attempt to cross over on to what they described as the “next segment” of life. The group consisted of 39 people.
·         In 2003, in an attack co-ordinated by Al-Qaeda on American soil, so the twin tower collapse after an aeroplane was driven straight at them. The attack saw the deaths of almost 300 American citizens and set forth a chain of events which shook the world.
·         After the BNP-Jamat coalition party came into power in Bangladesh in 2001, a series of hostile operations singling out Hindu families took place. Many women such as young Purnima Rani were raped in fact, 92 days after the results of the election had been announced a reported 228 accounts of rape took place and in the following three months, that number climbed up to 1000. 98% of the victims were either Hindu or of a related caste.
·         On the 27th of February 2004 writer Humayun Azad, infamous for his writing against the customs and norms in Bangladesh, was chopped to near death by Islamic fundamentalists hailing from JMB. His injuries were grave enough to push him towards eventual death.
·         In the year 2005 on the 30th of September, a Danish newspaper which went by the name of ‘Gelends Posten’, published 12 cartoon caricatures depicting Prophet Muhammad. Their actions provoked the fury of the worldwide Islamic community who in turn resorted to extreme measures as their rebuttal. In Pakistan an Imam deemed a reward of 1 million dollars as price for the head of one of the cartoonists. Amidst all the chaos many innocent people wre killed in Syria , Lebanon, Iran, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Muslims in Britain meanwhile led protest with banners reading – “Behead those who say Islam is a violent religion”.
·         The last time Bangladesh was presided over by a caretaker government, 21 year old cartoonist Arif was jailed because of his hand in the creation of the “Muhammad cat” joke. His indictment was followed up by more drama this time from the editor of “The Daily Prothom Alo”, who sought the forgiveness from the then Khotib of the Baitul Mokarram Mosque.

The events listed above are equivalent to just a drop of water in a vast ocean of incidents marred with religious barbarism. I’m confident that if an attempt to document all these events is undertaken, it will comfortably surpass the “Mahabharat”. I have already explored in length just how effectively the virus named “blind faith” is utilized to manufacture terrorism earlier in the book. Some seek to derive inspiration from the ‘good verses’ laid down in these various religious books and perform well in their lives. Some meanwhile seek to derive inspiration to commit terrorism from the more ‘violent’ verses of these books. And that is why I’d like to reiterate that these verses are nothing Trojan Horses waiting to implode – they’re disguised viruses!
